but it has been suggested by some of his former pupils, who remember him respectfully and affectionately as representing the best type of Chinese scholar and gentleman and feel
strongly that his long services are worthy of some such
recognition and appreciation.

Mr. Sun is not likely to survive many more
years and the circumstances are so exceptional that I do
not think that any precedent would be established by grant-
ing the allowance which would, of course, be terminable at
any time.

I should also be glad to be informed at the same time whether Your Lordship considers it necessary that
such matters should in future be referred for your sanction,
when, as in this case, there are funds available on the
ap ropriate sub-head of the vote for Charitable Services.
